Louise Scott

Artist Bio: Louise Scott (1936-2007)

Louise Scott was born in New York in 1936 to Canadian parents. She studied at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Montréal. In 1958 she attended the Salzbourg School of Art in Austria, where she studied with Oskar Kokoschka. Known for her dry pastel works on paper, and her oil paintings, the people she depicts in her work can be characterized by their round faces, round noses, small mouths, and globular eyes. They are often wearing colourful costumes, surrounded by medieval tapestries or oriental wallpaper.

Louise Scott taught at Concordia University for some years and later divided her time between Montréal and Nova Scotia. In an interview that she gave in 1977, Louise stated “I love colour and light and I try to produce images that are pleasing. There is no significance more profound than that”.
