Lucassie Echalook

Artist Bio: Lucassie Echalook (b. 1942)

Lucassie is brother to re-known carver Thomassie Echalook. He was born in 1942 in a small hunting camp near Inukjuak; a community in Nunavik, Northern Quebec. When LucassieÕs father passed away in 1950, Lucassie took up carving, a skill both he and Thomassie observed and learned from their older brother Peter, to help support the family.

Lucassie predominantly carves but also is a skilled drawer and printmaker. A selection of his prints was included in the 1975 Arctic Quebec print catalogue and in the 1976 Print Collection catalogue. His work first garnered attention in a group Exhibition; Eskimo Sculpture, in 1967, at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. His subjects include hunting scenes, shamans, and spirit-transformative figures, and works in angular planes and smooth polished forms.
