Pegi Nichol McLeod

Artist Bio: Pegi Nichol Macleod (1904-1949)

Born in Listowel, Ontario, she studied painting under Franklin Brownell at the Ottawa Art Association. MacLeod worked in both oil and watercolour, and her subjects included figures, landscapes, genre, and cityscapes. As an official War Artist, she painted the activities of the women’s services in the Canadian military during World War II. From 1940 on, she directed the summer art program at the University of New Brunswick. Her work is represented in many major collections; including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Hamilton Art Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Victoria.

This painting has a hand-written note on the back by Donald W. Buchanan, (Director of the National Gallery of Canada at that time). He notes that the painting shows horses at the Dominion Experimental Farm in Fredericton, which Pegi loved to visit during her summers at the University of New Brunswick.
