Artist Bio: Willard Morse Mitchell (1881-1955)
A Montreal artist and architect from Amherst, NS, who painted miniature watercolour scenes of rural Quebec and Montreal. In 1930, he moved to Montreal and focused on the sale of his miniatures as souvenirs to tourists. He carved His own frames and printed paper backings for his pieces that told the story behind the scene depicted; thus he made several versions of the same picture. His watercolours were well done and may have been popular as small gifts during the time he was producing them (c.1928-1944). It is said that he made upwards of 100 each of his most appreciated pictures. Known titles include Indian Church, Tadoussac, PQ, Old Time Bookstore (St. Catherines Street, Montreal), An Old Fashioned Caleche, and The Little Red Sleigh. These charming works are actively sought out by collectors.
