Clarence Alphonse Gagnon

Artist Bio: Clarence A. Gagnon (1881-1942)

Clarence Gagnon was born in Montreal and studied first with William Brymner at the Art Association in Montreal and later with Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris. Gagnon was noted for his impressionistic landscapes of rural Quebec, particularly scenes of villages in winter in the Laurentians and Charlevoix County. At Baie St. Paul he sketched with Edwin Holgate and A.Y. Jackson. He traveled widely in Europe and his work is in virtually every major Canadian collection including the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Musée du Quebec. This is a typical example of the artist’s work and is similar to the one in the collection of the Vancouver Art Gallery.
