Edith Smith

Artist Bio: Edith Smith (1867-1954)

Edith Agnes Smith was born in Halifax in 1867. She became interested in art at an early age, as did several other members of the Smith Family, who emerged as painters, illustrators, and designers. Smith began her studies under George Harvey at the Victoria School of Art and Design (currently NSCAD) in Halifax and then did post-graduate work at the Boston Art Club under Ernest Major. She returned to Halifax in 1896 and opened a studio with her brother Lewis

Later, Edith taught at the Victoria School of Art and Design, and the Halifax Ladies College. She also became very involved with the Nova Scotia Museum of Fine Arts and encouraged the founding of the Nova Scotia Society of Artists in 1912. Edith served various terms as president and vice-president of these institutions and contributed to their exhibitions annually. In addition, her work was exhibited in the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1931, the National Gallery in 1932, and the Toronto National Exhibition of 1937.
