Artist Bio: Pietro Testa (1611-1650)
Pietro Testa was a well-known Italian artist and engraver. He studied drawing with Domenichino (1581-1641), a prominent member of the Bolognese School from whom he learned the principles of clear, firm drawing. In 1629, he studied and worked for a period with Pietro da Cortona (1596-1669), where he learned the new Roman Baroque style.
Following this, Testa studied ancient sculpture and was employed by Caaiano dal Pozzo, the great art patron to make antiquarian drawings for his collection.
Testa is best-known for his well-executed drawings and etchings. He was assassinated at the age of 39 by a rival artist who threw his body into the Tiber.
