Artist Bio: William Winter, RCA, OSA (1909-1986)
William Winter was born in Winnipeg and studied painting at the Winnipeg School of Art under Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald and Franz Johnston. He moved to Toronto in 1937 and lived and painted there for the rest of his life. Winter has worked as an illustrator and painted in both watercolour and oil. He is mainly known for his city genre scenes with children. Children Skating is a classic example of the artist’s work and was painted in the late 1960s, following two years of painting and study in Italy and Spain.
Examples of Winter’s work are found in many important collections including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Museum of Fine arts in Montreal, the London Art Gallery, etc.
