Leroy Zwicker

Artist Bio: Leroy Zwicker (1906-1987)

LeRoy Zwicker was one of the most influential figures on the art scene in Nova Scotia during the past 50 years. He studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and then became the promotions manager for Moirs Candy. The iconic Pot of Gold chocolate box was designed by Leroy. In 1937 Leroy and his wife Marguerite took over management from his father, and went on to run Zwicker’s Gallery, founded by his father. At the time, Zwicker’s Gallery was the largest art gallery in Atlantic Canada.

Leroy helped to found the Nova Scotia Society of Artists and the Marine Art Association, as well as Maritime Art (1949); a local art journal that moved to Ontario and became Canadian Art. But it was an artist that he made his greatest contribution to the community.
