Artist Bio: Joan Miró (1893-1983)

Joan Miró was an acclaimed painter, sculptor, and ceramists from Spain. A museum dedicated to his work, the Foundation Joan Miró, was established in his native city of Barcelona in 1975. His work has been interpreted as Surrealist, but with a personal style veering at times into Expressionism. He was very interested in the unconscious or the subconscious mind. In 1913, he moved to Paris where a significant number of artists, poets and writers inspired him to develop his unique style of organic forms and flattened picture planes drawn with sharp lines. Miró became one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century and his work is found in major museums and collections worldwide.
