Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)

Rembrandt Harmenszoom van Rijn (1606-1669) was a Dutch painter and etcher. He is considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history and the most important in Dutch history. His contributions to art came in a period of great wealth and cultural achievement that historians call the Dutch Golden Age of painting.

Rembrandt’s skill as an etcher put the medium on the map, and his influences on the art of etching cannot be understated. His ability to create mood and atmosphere with the medium dramatically changed print-making, and opened a whole new world for artists.

Christ and the Woman from Samaria is one of Rembrandt’s best-known prints. The original copper plate wore in parts as the prints were pulled from it. Rembrandt re-worked the worn areas of the plate, and this print is from the second state of the plate which was pulled by the artist himself. It is a masterpiece of printmaking.
